It was another good day for Mack Brown and the Texas Longhorns football program, as they found a quarterback for 2009.
One problem with signing a star freshman quarterback is finding another star QB in the following class. Texas may have solved that problem already.
On April 2006 John Brantley IV, considered by many scouts to be the best QB in the state of Florida, verbally committed to the Longhorns. John Brantley qb, who plays for former Florida QB Kerwin Bell at Trinity Catholic High School in Ocala, is the son for former Gators linebacker John Brantley III.
"I won't let you down, coach," the younger John Brantley qb said during his news conference.
That's good news for Longhorns fans who remember Ryan Perriloux promising to stick with the Longhorns as part of the 2005 recruiting class, only to sign with LSU on signing day.
It will be interesting to see if John Brantley the quarterback sticks to his commitment, but it seems more likely that he will. The most important statement from the news conference came from Brantley's father, who wanted a school where his son could redshirt and grow into his 6-foot-3 frame.
A redshirt year for Brantley means that Jevan Snead, my pick to be the Longhorns starting QB for the next three seasons, will be a junior when Brantley uses his first of four seasons of eligibility. That would be great timing for the Longhorns.
In terms of being technically sound, there may not be a better quarterback in the nation than John Brantley the quarterback. He has a live arm and spins the ball well even on the tougher deep balls and can hit the deep out with consistency. John Brantley the quarterback throws well on the run especially to his right and makes good decisions with the ball.
